Kanken was shaped in 1978 to help prevent the common back problems among Swedish school children and, since then, this backpack has become one of Fjällräven’s most appreciated products.
The Mini version is appropriate for small children as well as for full-grown adults who are searching for a small backpack. It is ideal for carrying a change of clothes for preschool or food on an outing and as a bright everyday bag for fruits, books, water bottles and more.
The shoulder straps are pretty long but entirely adjustable and easily fit both big and even small backs. They can be conveniently fastened with a clasp so that they are not in the way when at their tightest.
The included PE foam seat cushion is intendedly stored in the interior back pocket and thwarts the main compartment’s contents from poking against your back. Handles at the slender and top, adjustable shoulder straps. The logo on the front side is reflective. It also has an address label inside the key compartment.
Fjallraven kanken Mini Backpack Review
The Fjallraven Kanken Mini is small enough in size to pack in a more perfect bag or use for a carry on “personal” item with you anywhere while still being polite to your seatmate’s overhead bin space.
If you are already wandering with a backpack, the top handles are key. It permits extreme versatility in countless situations.
You can easily rock this bag as a backpack while wandering the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, but again then easily slip your arm through the topmost handle to sort out some cash as you make your way to the market.
We found it to be quite significant to keep the handles clasped, as they tend to stick out and intercept passersby when traveling in heavily populated areas.
Storage and Pockets
Talking about its storage, the Fjallraven Kanken Mini backpack features four pockets for a diversity of needs. The interior pocket served as a brilliant place to store a passport or any significant paperwork like receipts or visa documents.
We definetely take safety and security very seriously, especially when wandering abroad, and this interior pocket would be nearly unbearable to access unless someone was able to snatch the bag off your back.
On the external side, along each side, there are two slim pockets with no closure. We used these negligibly but did find them quite useful for a cheap pair of sunglasses or easy access to some cough drops.
Security of Fajallaraven
We stated one of the security points on the Fjallraven Kanken Mini already. Still, one another feature we have really come to appreciate is the zippers and explicitly the liners that cover them adequately.
Every corner of the main zipper has a lip covering it, which is snug and stiff at the same time, which means you really have to get a good grip on the backpack to even expose the zipper pull, let alone open the sections.
It is indeed a massive win if you find yourself getting nervous about people tampering with your stuff in a crowded or unacquainted space. It is not a bulletproof solution but an excellent addition nonetheless.
Durability and Comfort
While Fjallraven offers a whole tremendous line of backpacks, the Fjallraven Kanken Mini is clearly the most suited for daily use. This means that you are not going to search the same focus on durability and comfort that you may find on a dedicated travel pack, for instance, which brings us to the straps.
Each strap is purposely made of high quality, sturdy nylon—which is excellent. But do keep in mind that there is little or no padding. None.
The material is hard-wearing, light in weight Vinylon F fabric that is capable enough to withstand dirt and wetness. The main or the critical compartment has a large zipped opening, which makes it easy to pack or unpack. The two flat side pockets and a zipped pocket on the front side would definitely grab your eye.
We were pretty anxious about this, as backpacking across a hot and humid country with this type of strap can lead to some sort of discomfort at best and cuts on your arm at worst. But not this excellent little pack. This backpack has held up over a bunch of various types of climates, and we have yet to have any issues with its straps. We are not sure if this is due to the bag is so tiny it is generally on the lighter phase or what, but the straps have been astonishingly comfortable. There are also no signs of folding or even creasing, which I think is very lovely.
